Passengers of The Sea.

In essence the projects roots, will be based on people inspired by the ocean, people who live off the ocean or simply people who take to the ocean for professional or soulful purposes. There are so many amazing people walking in both the light and shadows of the world, with such great stories to tell and Passengers Of The Sea aims to shed some light on these Passengers and what gets them stoked.

Concept and background

This first episode gets into the mind and life of artist/surfer Kristyan Stjerne. No Bio needed as its all in the film.

This is a pilot, to see how the concept is received. This EP. in particular was a passion project that documents a good friend of mine that inspires me daily. I shot it in a day last year in Bali but 2014/2015 was such a crazy year that I never got round to doing anything with it. To get an ongoing series going, I will need to step this up and raise some funds but that is dependent on how this pilot goes down, so if this inspires you, entertains you or gets you stoked, then please share so we can collectively get this off the ground and flying

What is the idea behind Passengers of the Sea?

The idea for Passengers of the Sea is to create a platform to share stories of all kinds about the sea in an original cinematic format. This first film is a pilot, to see how the concept is received. It documents a good friend of mine that inspires me daily. I shot it in a day last year in Bali. With 2014/2015 being such a crazy year, I never got round to doing anything with it.

My aim is to kick the platform off by producing twelve 8-10 minute shorts based on twelve Passengers who are inspired by the ocean. They will consist of artists, photographers, makers, explorers, surfers etc. If these are a success I would like to keep producing sets of series that will tell sea stories of all colours. I am yet to set up the platform. If this first pilot is well received sponsors will be invited on board to help launch the project.

In essence the roots will be people inspired by the ocean, people who live off the ocean or simply take to the ocean for professional or soulful purposes. There are so many amazing people walking in both the light and shadows of the world, with such great stories to tell and with Passengers Of The Sea I aim to organically find these people to shed some light on these “Passengers” and what gets them stoked.

What was the inspiration for the project?

I’m actually not sure where the inspiration came from to start with. It just organically evolved in my head. I count myself lucky to have grown up surrounded by the ocean, which has completely shaped my life. The ocean inspired my passion to make films, so creating films about people with similar interests is a way for me to share stories of like minded people by doing what I love.

Making a portrait of somebody is a very personal thing but when you are working with creative individuals that are inspired by similar things as yourself, telling their story comes naturally. It becomes personal to both the filmmaker and creative and the connection is evident. Passengers of the Sea will provide me with an outlet to translate and share, to the best of my ability, why it is we do what we do.

So for the series of films, do you already have a series of characters in mind for future episodes or will you let the project evolve organically?

Yes I have a number of characters in mind but I would also like the project to evolve. It’s looking like the rest of my year is gearing towards surf travel and these trips will allow the project to grow organically with all the new characters I will meet along the way.

The Salt Trail won so many awards and garnered huge publicity within the surfing world – do you feel this project is an extension of The Salt Trail, or a fresh start?

I guess it inspired Passengers Of The Sea in a way but its more of a fresh start. That story was based on the feeling of travel whereas this will have a far broader story line, getting in the minds of all people inspired by the ocean.

The idea is to start an ongoing series that could evolve into a web platform and be used as a media outlet to tell all kinds of stories about the ocean (positive, negative, constructive, happy etc.) in the most cinematic and original way possible to draw people in and build an audience to share.

They will be real stories about real people that will hopefully make people think.
